Carbon-Zero R&D Centre

A carbon-zero research campus in dialogue with Edirne's historic fabric, woven into water and landscape.

The project began by asking how a contemporary research programme could sit alongside Edirne's monumental historic silhouette. The approach was to accompany the context rather than compete with it — weaving horizontal masses together with courtyards and water.

The project brings a contemporary research programme onto the same ground as Edirne's monumental Ottoman legacy. The masses sit in a horizontal composition that respects the historic silhouette; courtyards and water surfaces between them form the public spine of the campus.

On the façade, timber brise-soleil and perforated metal panels feed the interior with controlled daylight while lowering the building's energy load. The waterside main elevation, with its symmetry and reflection, defines the calm, monographic face of the campus.

Interiors — from the exhibition hall to the canteen, from atrium voids to the laboratories — turn the carbon-zero ambition into a spatial narrative: natural materials, continuous daylight and an uninterrupted relationship with the landscape.
